1.5 Acronyms and Abbreviations
While most of these are indigenous to Usenet (aka newsgroups), some of them will pop up on message boards and in email, so they're good to know. Here is a list of common abbreviations and acronyms used online:
AFAIK - As Far As I Know AFAIAC - As Far As I Am Concerned (or AFAIC) aka - Also Known As BTW - By the Way FS - For Sale FT - For Trade FWIW - For What It's Worth HAND - Have a Nice Day (often used sarcastically) HTH - Hope This Helps IMO - In My Opinion IMHO - In My Humble Opinion ISO - In Search Of LOL - Laughing Out Loud OT - Off Topic (as in, not relating to the topic of the board/group) NP: - Now Playing (put at the end of a message to show what the poster was listening to at the time of the post) NW: - Now Watching QOTSA (or QotsA) - Queens of the Stone Age ROFL - Rolling On the Floor, Laughing ROFLMAO - Rolling On the Floor, Laughing My Ass Off RTFM - Read The Fucking Manual (add any F word you choose, depending on your sensibilities; people will know what you mean) SftD - Songs for the Deaf WTB - Wanted To Buy (mostly used in the subject line) WTT - Wanted To Trade (mostly used in the subject line)
And here are some smilie faces (aka "smilies"), which are most often as nonverbal communication, which helps to better convey meanings online:
:-) - the basic smilie. If you can't see it, turn your head 90 degrees to the left (or rotate the picture 90 degrees to the left in your head). If you still can't see it, the colon (:) represents the eyes, the hyphen (-) represents the nose, and the right parentheses represents the mouth. Several off-shoots of this basic smilie exist, all of which involve modification of the "nose": :) :o) are two common examples.
;-) - winking smilie ;-P - smilie sticking its tongue out :-( - sad smilie
There are many others. Look out for them.
