1.1 Who are the Queens of the Stone Age?
The Queens of the Stone Age, or QOTSA for short, are Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri. Josh plays guitar, does most of the vocal work, and writes most of the songs. Nick plays bass, does some vocal work, and writes some of the songs. A rotating line-up fills the other positions in the band. The band was just Josh initially and was under the name Gamma Ray when he started it in 1997, until an artist who had already copyrighted the name threatened to sue. In 1998, the name changed to Queens of the Stone Age and Alfredo Hernandez joined Josh to make the self-titled first album (note: Nick is not on the first album). Since then, the line-up has changed several times and QOTSA has released three albums: Queens of the Stone Age (1998), Rated R (2000), and Songs for the Deaf (2002).
