Pogopop interview
P: Here we are with Joshua, the singer-guitarist from the Queens of the Stone Age, after their performance on the "Nel nome del rock" stage: first question is about the tonight gig, beautiful but sad, wasn't it? (the day before, the Morphine's singer, after few songs, died on the stage because of an heart attack, see also the page dedicated to this tragic event, n.d.a.)

QOTSA: Yeah... very sad, very strange day... Mixed emotions...

P: In our opinion that's the best way to cheers someone who's no more here... to play the same...

QOTSA: Yes, is really hard, because they are the best american band that there is, right now, in these days and in ages, and the show must go because that's what Mark would do if something happened to somebody else, you know, and at the same time is hard do like play today because this stage was occupied by somebody who fell and it's so beautiful here, in the Temple of Fortune (Fortune in latin means also destiny, n.d.a.), it's sad and beautiful at the same time and it's very peculiar...mixed emotions.

P: Tonight you played 2 new songs: do you think the next album will have the same scheme of those two with the superimposition of the 2 voices, yours and the one of the bassist, and so powerful?

QOTSA: It's gonna be the speculum of what we'll do, is gonna be wider, so we can establish we gonna do more than in the first record, and so the second record will have heavier songs than the first record and there will be equal by songs either more mellow and strange and kind of airy and spacey you know... and we feel like we are at the widing, what it is we do even more and it takes setting up the first record to do that, you know, we got like 20 songs right now so we're ready to go, you know...

P: Double album like the Smashing Pumpkins....!

QOTSA: (Laughing) nooooo, we'll only pick the best eleven, you know, we love collactables and vynils and stuff, so we'll release the rest kind of in mass, you know...

P: with the Man's Ruin?

QOTSA: Yes, with the Man's Ruin.

While we were interviewing Joshua, a tatooed man came close to us asking Joshua if he needed to be saved....

QOTSA: ....the fifth member of the Queens, Hutch, he is the sound man but he is in the band, so he's trying to save me!

P: Two last questions, very short! You had technical problems on stage this evening. What happened? We saw the keyboard player destroying the keyboard!!!!

QOTSA: Well, we generally have a rule we never play on rented gear but we heard this is a free concert and that it is to benefit somebody, and we wanted to come and play in Italy and so we cannot work together so we decided to play on rented gear, but as we learned once again, it's like... it's not... when one's on rented gear, you are... we are unable to be who we actually are, I mean that tonight was fun and good, but at the same time it's not actually what we are, even the drumset is tiny, you know, it makes the difference, and it's open air which means we really need to have our gear, so that we are what we are, because if we have our gear it doesn't matter if it is an open air...

P: and the bass was very low too...

QOTSA: we always play with two SPT, and like to play with one means that a big chunk of what we are it doesn't exist now...

P: People could talk in the first row.....

QOTSA:....and that's no good, and even know that we asked for was difficult to get,so, I mean, you just play anyway.

Giordano (Mudhoney webmaster): this is unrelated to the interview: what do you think about the bass player of Mudhoney leaving the band?

QOTSA: Mark quit? Oh shit, man! Really!!!!! What a shitty day today! I mean it is a good day but it's like a lot of shit is going on....they don't love amazing stuff and they are always quite underground and cool, so I'm sad to see that! And I'm sure that Steven and Mark and I know Danny, Peters is a hard working matter, so I'm sure something good will come out you know, ...with the break up of a good band another four chances for something good....I wish them the best luck, because I like all those guys, they play great music!

Giordano: Which is the Mudhoney song that you'd put in a "Best of"?

QOTSA: You know that my favourite Mudhoney song is the obvious one, because I don't have all the record cds, so like my favourite song is "Touch me I'm sinking". I mean it's easy cause it's so good, you know, is to me is like it symbolizes what they are...

P: Would you like to say hello to the Pogopop listeners...
