Live Songs and Videos (mp3s, real audio, etc.) - Right now, www.qotsa.net has the best media section. For mp3s, try an online sharing service like Kazaa. The best way to obtain videos is through trading. Read more about trading in section 5.4. Bootlegs - information on how to obtain bootlegs is in section 5.2. Other QOTSA Fans - several message boards exist, such as the board at the www.qotsa.com. More info on how to find other fans can be found in sections 1.4 and 1.4a-c. QOTSA Merchandise - QOTSA cds and tapes can be found at just about any online music store (such as CD Now or Amazon) and, depending on where you live, in a store near you (if you live near a large city, you have a better chance of finding QOTSA releases). Vinyl is more difficult to find, especially the ones that are out of print. Rekords Rekords is supposed to re-release many of the hard-to-find QOTSA, Kyuss, and Desert Sessions vinyl in the future. The "limited edition" Rated R gatefold vinyl can be found just about anywhere. The best place to find out of print vinyl right now is ebay. T-shirts, stickers, posters, and other such items are very difficult to find outside of QOTSA shows. Ebay is your best bet for those. 1.4 Online Community The online community for any band is composed of message boards, mailing lists, and (usually) a newsgroup or two. Here are the defining characteristics of these forums: Message Boards - message boards can be created by just about anyone and they are thus prone to come and go often. A message board is exactly what it sounds like: it is an HTML or script-based series of pages where people can create and reply to topics that deal with the subject of the board. For more info on message boards and where to find QOTSA-related boards, go to section 4.1a. Mailing Lists - again, the name is an accurate description of what this is, which is, quite simply, a list of email addresses that a piece of mail goes to. A mailing list can be run by a person or group of people. In this case, every address would be entered in the CC (carbon copy) or BCC (blind carbon copy) rows so that the person who runs the group wouldn't have to resend so many messages. By sending messages out BCC, everyone else's addresss is hidden from others on the list so that no one has to worry about their addresses being sold to SPAMers. Mailing lists can also be run through 3rd party systems, such as Yahoo. In this case, a person subscribes to the group by sending a message to an address, such as subscribe-qotsa@yahoo.com, and that person's address is then added to the list. This service is almost always provided for free. For more info on how mailing lists work and the names/subscription addresses for QOTSA groups, go to section 1.4b. Newsgroups - a newsgroup is significantly more complicated than either a message board or a mailing list and they are thus very difficult to create. There is a rather lengthy process involved in creating one, and once one is created, you need a newsreader (which you can obtain for free) to view it. Because they are so complicated, a short description of one is not provided here. Go to section 1.4c for information on them. Currently, there is no QOTSA newsgroup. At least one effort has been made to create one, and that effort failed. See section 1.4c for more info on how to get a QOTSA newsgroup started. 1.4a Message Boards QOTSA Message Boards (currently active): Official Site http://www.qotsa.com - Traffic on this board has really picked up recently, so you're likely to find alot of new posts and alot of people hanging around. This is the band's official board and Josh has posted a few times, but they don't hang out there. Though the band has taken a more active role in their site than they have in the past, the site is still run by Interscope and consequentially, they ask you for alot of information about yourself when you register. Feel free to make up this information. Almost every QOTSA fan site has a message board as well. 1.4b Mailing Lists A mailing list is like a mesмЅe#Р +т“З,Ќl,ЌlЌЌ Ќ Њ(ЌьЌ˜ЌTюЌJS Times New Roman Symbol ArialCourier New0Courier NewTimes New RomanTimes New RomanQueens of the Stone Age FAQ v2.0 (August 16, 2002) Welcome to version 2.0 of the Queens of the Stone Age FAQ (August 16, 2002) Most of you already know everything that's here, but for everyone else, reading the faq can help answer the basic questions about the band. Credits and Disclaimer 6.1 Credits 6.2 Legal Disclaimer 6.3 Terms of Use 1.1 Who are the Queens of the Stone Age? The Queens of the Stone Age, or QOTSA for short, are Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri. Josh plays guitar, does most of the vocal work, and writes most of the songs. Nick plays bass, does some vocal work, and writes some of the songs. A rotating line-up fills the other positions in the band. The band was just Josh initially and was under the name Gamma Ray when he started it in 1997, until an artist who had already copyrighted the name threatened to sue. In 1998, the name changed to Queens of the Stone Age and Alfredo Hernandez joined Josh to make the self-titled first album (note: Nick is not on the first album). Since then, the line-up has changed several times and the band has released three albums: Queens of the Stone Age (1998), Rated R (2000), and Songs for the Deaf (2002). 1.2 First Appearance QOTSA's first live appearance under the name "Queens of the Stone Age" is unknown at present. The best guess now is that it was at the OK Hotel in Seattle on November 20, 1997. The line-up for this show was: Josh, Matt Cameron, and John McBain. 1.3 Where Can I Find...Online? Pictures - www.stonerrock.com/qotsa, www.qotsa.net, and www.qotsa.de all have large picture sections that sage board in that any message sent can be seen by all the members of the group. However, only the people subscribed to the mailing list can view the messages sent. A mailing list can be run by a person or group of people. In this case, every address would be entered in the CC (carbon copy) or BCC (blind carbon copy) rows of a new message so that the person who runs the group wouldn't have to resend so many messages. By sending messages out BCC, everyone else's addresss is hidden from others on the list so that no one has to worry about their addresses being sold to SPAMers. To subscribe to a list like this, send a request to the person or people who run(s) the list. Mailing lists can also be run through 3rd party systems, such as Yahoo. In this case, a person subscribes to the group by sending a message to an address, such as subscribe-qotsa@yahoo.com, and that person's address is then added to the list. This service is almost always provided for free. To subscribe to a list, all you have to do is send a message to either the person who runs the group or to the subscription address of a group run by a 3rd party. Most mailing lists have a few short rules that usually involve the maximum number of posts a person can send per day (if the list is run by someone who would have to deal with several messages), whether .jpgs or audio files can be sent, what kind of content is appropriate to the list, etc. Once you subscribe, you will probably be sent a list of the rules. How rigidly the group adheres to those rules is something that you'll be able to discern after a while. Only one QOTSA mailing list exists at this point. It is run through Yahoo and gets about 10 posts every few weeks (usually these messages come once someone brings a topic up and people start talking about it). To subscribe, send an email to qotsa-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. 1.4c Newsgroups Newsgroups are very complicated. Because of this, they will not be explained here. Go to http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Lab/6882/ for the beginner's guide to Usenet (or to news.newusers.questions on Usenet). This should answer all of your questions. There is no QOTSA newsgroup at the moment. An attempt was made to create one in early 2001. It was shot down on alt.config due to lack of interest in QOTSA on already-existing newsgroups. If you're interested in creating a QOTSA newsgroup, read the FAQs in the next paragraph and then email this site for some strategies. Here's a good FAQ about how to create an "alt" newsgroup: http://www.visi.com/~barr/alt-creation-guide.html. A QOTSA newsgroup would most likey fall under the alt. heading (probably as alt.music.qotsa). In case you're interested in other hierarchies, here's a guide to creating newsgroups under various other hierarchies: http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Lab/6882/ncreate.html. 1.5 Acronyms and Abbreviations While most of these are indigenous to Usenet (aka newsgroups), some of them will pop up on message boards and in email, so they're good to know. Here is a list of common abbreviations and acronyms used online: AFAIK - As Far As I Know AFAIAC - As Far As I Am Concerned (or AFAIC) aka - Also Known As BTW - By the Way FS - For Sale FT - For Trade FWIW - For What It's Worth HAND - Have a Nice Day (often used sarcastically) HTH - Hope This Helps IMO - In My Opinion IMHO - In My Humble Opinion ISO - In Search Of LOL - Laughing Out Loud OT - Off Topic (as in, not relating to the topic of the board/group) NP: - Now Playing (put at the end of a message to show what the poster was listening to at the time of the post) NW: - Now Watching ROFL - Rolling On the Floor, Laughing ROFLMAO - Rolling On the Floor, Laughing My Ass Off RTFM - Read The Fucking Manual (add any F word you choose, depending on your sensibilities; people will know what you mean) WTB - Wanted To Buy (mostly used in the subject line) WTT - Wanted To Trade (mostly used in the subject line) And here are some smilie faces (aka "smilies"), which are most often as nonverbal communication, which helps to better convey meanings online: :-) - the basic smilie. If you can't see it, turn your head 90 degrees to the left (or rotate the picture 90 degrees to the left in your head). If you still can't see it, the colon (:) represents the eyes, the hyphen (-) represents the nose, and the right parentheses represents the mouth. Several off-shoots of this basic smilie exist, all of which involve modification of the "nose": :) :o) are two common examples. ;-) - winking smilie ;-P - smilie sticking its tongue out :-( - sad smilie There are many others. Look out for them. 2.1 Origin of the Name "When we were making a record in 1992, under the band Kyuss, our producer Chris Goss, he would joke and say "You guys are like the Queens of the Stone Age." The band was originally called Gamma Ray, but we got threatened with a lawsuit because someone else had it. So we were Queens of the Stone Age." - Nick, Ozzfest 2000 chat. Why Queens? Why not Kings of the Stone Age? "Kings would be too macho. The Kings of the Stone Age wear armor and have axes and wrestle. The Queens of the Stone Age hang out with the Kings of the Stone Age's girlfriends, when they wrestle. And also, it was also just a name given to us by Chris Goss. He gave us the name Queens of the Stone Age. Rock should be heavy enough for the boys and sweet enough for the girls. That way, everyone is happy and it's more of a party. Kings of the Stone Age, is too lopsided." - Josh, Ozzfest 2000 chat. 2.2 The Line-Up One of the most unique things about QOTSA is that they're line-up is constantly changing. Find out why in section 2.2a, who played what in the past in section 2.2b, and who you're likely to see on the stage when you go to a show in section 2.2c. 2.2a Why it's Always Changing Here are some quotes about why the line-up is always changing. "I'd like to keep it loose, open and free," Homme says of the Queens' lineup. "I just think that if we can expand and contract, then there's nothing we can't do, and even the old songs will never be something like, 'Oh, let's not play that anymore.'" Josh from the 2000/11/xx Guitar World interview. "It really is more of a musical experiment.... It keeps moving and reinventing itself. That way we never get painted into a corner." Josh from the 2000/09/xx Guitar World interview. 2.2b Past Line-Ups All incarnations are live. version 1 (1997) Josh Homme: guitar/vocals Matt Cameron: drums John McBain: guitar/bass (?) version 2 (early 1998) Josh Homme: guitar/bass/vocals Alfredo Hernandez: drums John McBain: guitar/bass/vocals version 3 (later 1998) Josh: guitar/vocals Nick: bass/vocals Alfredo Hernandez: drums Dave Catching: guitar/lap steel/keyboards version 4 (April 10, 1999 - April 27, 1999) Josh: guitar/vocals Nick: bass/vocals Alfredo Hernandez: drums Mario Lalli: guitar/lap steel/keyboards (Dave was in Europe with the earthlings?) version 5 (mid-1999 - June 22, 2000) Josh: guitar/vocals Nick: bass/vocals Dave Catching: guitar/lap steel/keyboards/vocals Gene Troutmann: drums version 6 (July 2, 2000 - May 23, 2001) Josh: guitar/vocals Nick: bass/vocals Gene: drums Brendon McNichol: guitar/lap steel/keyboards/vocals version 7 (May 23, 2001 - March 7, 2002) Josh: guitar/vocals Nick: bass/vocals Gene: drums Brendon McNichol: guitar/lap steel/keyboards/vocals Mark Lanegan: vocals version 8 (March 7, 2002 - July 28, 2002) Josh: guitar/vocals Nick: bass/vocals Dave Grohl: drums Troy Van Leeuwen: guitar/lap steel/keyboards Mark Lanegan: vocals version 9 (July 28, 2002 - present) Josh: guitar/vocals Nick: bass/vocals Mark Lanegan: vocals drummer: ? 2.2c Current Line-Up Since July 28, 2002 Josh Homme: guitar/vocals Nick Oliveri: bass/vocals Troy Van Leeuwen: guitar/lap steel/keyboards/vocals Mark Lanegan: vocals Drums: ? 2.3 Equipment For info and pictures on the equipment used by the band, go to Just Rock: www.stonerrock.com/qotsa. 2.4 The Stoner Rock Label Ah, the Stoner Rock label. Kyuss pioneered and perfected the style; QOTSA leads the charge into the next decade. Here's what the band has to say about the label: "Stoner rock is like a toy truck to me," says Homme. "Sometimes you drive it around the room, and sometimes you light it on fire, do stunts with it and destroy it." ... "So it's more like we're lighting the truck on fire this time." - Josh from the 2000/09/xx Guitar World interview. "We're not a stoner rock band, we're a rock n' roll band," says Oliveri. "I don't even smoke weed. Stoner rock... isn't that like Judas Priest and Ozzy? I mean, when you were like, in middle school, and you wore the buttons, and you were a stoner and you smoked weed. The rock I listened to was serious Priest and stuff. You want to talk about the real stoner rock--that's probably where it comes from, or where it makes the most sense at least." It's more something that someone else did than something we did," adds Homme. "There's a whole list of things it takes to make music, and drugs are certainly one of the things on that list, but they're not the most important thing on that list. And the only thing I think is kind of weak about stoner rock is it touts the one thing on the list and goes, 'Look!' That seems almost like dumbing it down a little bit." The only time we were stoner rock was when we played in Italy and they actually threw little rocks at us," laughs Homme. "Kyuss' last gig ever was in Italy at this anti-mafia festival, and we played with Soundgarden. And towards the end of the set, John (Garcia, singer of Kyuss) said something--he always says crazy shit--and it was on this field of gravel. And so all of a sudden, here’s some gravel." - Josh from the 2000/12/xx Rockpile article. "We hate it," says Queens ringleader Josh Homme. "That phrase took off in Europe but I mean we're not a stoner rock band. What is that? If anything it's something we were doing four years ago before they called it stoner rock." - Josh from the 1999/01/27 Toronto Sun article. "If I had a choice, I would take that away," Homme says. "Stoner rock, to me, is like saying the crucial element is drugs. And I don't believe that that's the case. I'm not an AA guy or anything, but at the same time I don't need any of that to make music." - Josh from the 1999/11/24 Jam! article. 3.1 Short Discography Here is a list of the essential QOTSA releases that are relatively easy to find on CD: Songs for the Deaf - Interscope, 2002 Rated R - Interscope, 2000 Queens of the Stone Age - Loosegroove, 1998 QOTSA/Beaver split - Man's Ruin, 1998 QOTSA/Kyuss split - Man's Ruin, 1997 These releases contain most of QOTSA's songs. For tracklists and other details about each of the albums, click on the titles. For more information about other releases, go to http://hobbs1767.tripod.com/discography.html. 3.2 Is the person on the first album's cover a man or a woman? If you have the album, you've probably noticed by now that the person on the cover appears to be a woman until you notice how manly those hands are. Despite the hands, she is a she: "It is a woman. I never noticed that her hands were so manly until it was brought up to me much later. We wanted to put the entire picture on the cover but since there is nudity, we were informed that it would constantly get covered. And we realized that this kind of, shall I say, tasteful crotch shot, was somewhat disturbing. So you have to use the words and images. It can't be censored, but make it ask if everyone should be." - Josh Homme, Ozzfest Chat, Aug. 16, 2000 Note: The vinyl version of the first album includes the entire photograph. 3.3 Who is that on the Rated R cd? That is Dave Catching, who contributed his talents to the album and has toured with the band. If anyone knows where/when this picture was taken, please email. 3.4 Vinyl Release info Here are some basic edition numbers for QOTSA's releases, as well as where you're likely to find them and how much you'd have to spend to get one. QOTSA (first LP) - released by Man's Ruin on Nov. 1, 1998 (cat no. MR151); limited to 3000 copies: 2500 black, 300 yellow, 200 green. This pressing sold out within three days of its release. The best place to find it is Ebay. Since Man's Ruin went under, expect to spend alot on this one: from 100 US dollars to 300 US dollars (the black pressings cost less, the colored pressings cost more). Check the ebay section of www.kyussqotsa.fr.st for more up-to-date price info. There also appears to be a blue vinyl pressing of this album that was done with the original pressing. It was limited to either 50 or 100 copies and may have been part of the 3000 records or may be part of an extra pressing. QOTSA/Kyuss split LP - there was a purple edition pressed. No word on how limited it was or how available it is. QOTSA/Beaver split LP - released by Man's Ruin on Sept. 18, 1998 (cat no. MR140); no word on how limited it was; available for 15 US dollars to 40 US dollars. Rated R LP - released by Polydor (aka Interscope) on Nov. 17, 2000 in Germany and Nov. 27, 2000 in the UK; marketed as a "limited edition" LP, but it is available at almost any online record store and in many real record stores for about 15 US dollars. 3.5 Unreleased/Live Only Songs Over the years, QOTSA has played some songs live that they've not released in any form. All of these songs are covers. Here they are: Don't Talk to Me [G.G. Allin] - played on Dec. 18, 1998 Simple Exploding Man [Mondo Generator] - a few times in 1998 and 1999 Precious and Grace [Z.Z. Top] - played at many shows in 2001 They've also played some Kyuss and Desert Sessions songs live. Here is a list of those songs: Thumb [Kyuss] - played on July 25, 1998 Green Machine [Kyuss] - played on July 25, 1998 Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop [Kyuss] - played on Jan. 14, 2001, Jan. 19, 2001, Jan. 25, 2001, and Feb. 2, 2001 Freedom Run [Kyuss] - a bit of it was played on Feb. 4, 2001 Cake (Who Shit on the?) [Desert Sessions vol. 2] - played on Feb. 2, 1999 and Feb. 6, 1999 (with Pete Stahl on vox) A #1 [Desert Sessions vol. 6] - played a few times in 1999 Jr. High Love [Desert Sessions vol. 4] - played on Sept. 2, 1999 Rickshaw [Desert Sessions vol. 6] - played several times in 1999, 2000, and 2001 You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, but I Feel Like a Millionaire [Desert Sessions vol. 5] - played several times in 1999, 2000, and 2001 Allen's Wrench [Kyuss] - played a few times in 2002 starting on April 27, 2002 3.6 Early Versions of Released Songs QOTSA have previewed some of their new material on the road a few times in the past. Here are the songs that have made live appearances long before they've been released: Infinity - played on Dec. 2, 1998 with different lyrics Tension Head - played live in 1998 and 1999, presumably as a Mondo Generator cover; lyrics/everything else are the same as on Rated R Monsters in the Parasol - played as a Desert Sessions song in 1999 with the "I'll cut your pretty face" line at the end. You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, but I Feel Like a Millionaire - played as a Desert Sessions song from 1999 to 2001. 3.7 Cover Songs Here is a list of every song QOTSA has covered (not including Kyuss and Desert Sessions songs), either live or on a release: Don't Talk to Me / G.G. Allin - played live on Dec. 18, 1998 Never Say Never / Romeo Void - on the Feel Good Hit of the Summer single (2000) Who'll Be the Next in Line / The Kinks - on the Feel Good Hit of the Summer single (2000) Back to Dungaree High / Turbonegro - on Alpha Motherfuckers: A Tribute to Turbonegro (2001) Precious and Grace / Z.Z. Top - played live in 2001 3.8 Is Two Tears a QOTSA Song? No, Two Tears is not a QOTSA song. It's by a band called Fireball Ministry and is on their album Ou Est La Rock. How it got labelled a QOTSA song is a mystery, but it is definitely not a QOTSA song. The mislabel appeared around the summer of 2001 and continues to be downloaded and uploaded with 'QOTSA' attached as the band name. 3.9 Rekords Rekords Rekords Rekords is Josh Homme's very own record label, which came into existence with the help of Southern Lord Records in the summer of 2001. Josh formed the label after Man's Ruin Records went under in order to provide a home for the Desert Sessions and other bands/projects focused more on art than on selling records: What's your main goal with the label? Goal one is to do well enough so that some major label offers to buy Rekords Rekords for a million pounds. Then I can tell them to go fuck themselves. Goal number two, without sounding like too much of a pretentious bastard, is to put out music that is more geared towards art. Something must come out to offset the stuff that's too bubblegum. What do you look for in bands you sign? Well, with Rekords Rekords, we don't sign bands. We're partners. We split the money with them and they own the record when we're done. So often record labels have this cotton slave mentality, which is like 'you don't know what you're doing and you just gave me everything - thank you!' Rekords Rekords is home to Fatso Jetson, Like Hell, and the Desert Sessions right now. Josh plans to keep its releases limited to five a year at present and only accepts demos given to him at shows. To keep up with all the latest news and releases from the label, go to www.rekordsrekords.com. 4. Related Bands/Side Projects 4.1 Kyuss The greatest band nobody's ever heard of, Kyuss (pron. kai-uss) started it all in the early 90's. Kyuss' connection to QOTSA is that both Josh and Nick were founding members of Kyuss. Alfredo Hernandez also played drums on Kyuss' last album, ...And the Circus Leaves Town. For more information about Kyuss, visit Jay Pigot's wonderful Kyuss Pages. Kyuss' releases: Wretch (1991) Blues for the Red Sun (1992) Welcome to Sky Valley (1994) ...And the Circus Leaves Town (1995) 4.2 Desert Sessions The Desert Sessions are Josh Homme and co.'s on-going project. Every year or two, Josh and his friends (usually members of other bands, such as Kyuss, QOTSA, Masters of Reality, earthings?, Fasto Jetson, Monster Magnet, etc.) gather in the desert to drink, smoke, and make some incredible music. The first six volumes of the Desert Sessions were released by Man's Ruin. They are now being released by Josh Homme's record label, Rekords Rekords. You can usually find the cd versions of the Desert Sessions in good record shops. The vinyl is harder to find (check Ebay). The first six volumes of the Desert Sessions are going to be re-released by Rekords Rekords, but until then, finding them will be difficult. Volumes of the Desert Sessions are released two at a time on cd and one at a time on vinyl (except for the 7th and 8th volumes, where were released as a double LP). Each volume contains five or six songs; the cd versions contain one or two bonus tracks not found on the vinyl. The songs themselves range from real rock 'n roll (see Rickshaw, Cake (Who Shit on the?), Avon, Monsters in the Parasol, A #1, The Idiots Guide, etc.) to complete insanity (see Hogleg, Interpretive Reading, Preachin, Man's Ruin Preach, You Keep on Talkin, Take Me to Your Leader, Winners, Ending, Piano Bench Breaks, etc.). Expect the unexpected from the Desert Sessions. The Desert Sessions: Volume 1: Instrumental Driving Music for Felons (1997) Volume 2: Status: Ships Commander Butchered (1998) Volume 3: Set Co-Ordinates for the White Dwarf (1998) Volume 4: Hard Walls and Little Trips (1998) Volume 5: Poetry for the Masses: She Shed Shithead by the She Sore (1999) Volume 6: Poetry for the Masses: Black Anvil Ego (1999) Volume 7: Gypsy Marches (2001) Volume 8: Can't You See Under My Thumb? There You Are (2001) 4.3 Mondo Generator Mondo Generator is Nick's project. Nick goes by Rex Everything for it. So far, only one album has come from Mondo Generator: Cocaine Rodeo (1997/2001). Josh Homme, Brant Bjork, Up N. Syder, and Burnt Mattress fill out the line-up. Mondo Generator's 13th Floor/Tension Head became QOTSA's Tension Head (on Rated R). Cocaine Rodeo is available from Southern Lord records. 4.4 Dwarves The Dwarves are another band that Nick has played with. Their sound is much more punk than any other band related to QOTSA. Go to www.thedwarves.com for more info. 4.5 earthlings? The earthlings? are Dave Catching, Pete Stahl, and Fred Drake's band. Josh played guitar on their second album, Human Beans, and the earthings? contributed At the Helm of Hell's Ships and Sugar Rush to the Desert Sessions. Pete Stahl is also featured on another Desert Sessions track: Cake (who shit on the?), and he toured with QOTSA for a while in 1999. Dave Catching toured extensively with QOTSA in 1998 and 1999 as a guitar player/keyboardist, and he's played various instruments on some QOTSA songs. Fred Drake made huge contributions to the 7th and 8th volumes of the Desert Sessions. Unfortunately, Fred passed away from cancer in June 2002. For more info on the earthlings?, go to www.earthlingsmusic.com. 4.6 Masters of Reality Masters of Reality is Chris Goss' band. Josh and Mark played on Deep in the Hole (2001), and Brendon McNichol is MOR's touring guitarist. Chris Goss has contributed a great deal to QOTSA (and Kyuss) over the years as a producer and a performer. For more info on Masters of Reality, go to their official page: www.mastersofreality.com. 4.7 Wellwater Conspiracy Wellwater Conspiracy is John McBain and Matt Cameron's on-going project. John and Matt were part of the first touring QOTSA line-up in 1997. Josh sings on three songs from Wellwater Conspiracy's second album, Brotherhood of Electric-Operat and plays bass on In Pursuit of Gingerbread Men (b-side). 4.8 Beaver Beaver is a Dutch "stoner rock" band based in Amsterdam. Long-time friends with QOTSA, Beaver appeared on a Man's Ruin split with the band in 1998, and Milo and Eva joined Josh on bass and drums for the song 18 AD. Beaver is also responsible for the Dutch lyrics in Quick and to the Pointless. For more information on Beaver, go to www.13eaver.com. 4.9 Ween Another of QOTSA's long-time friends, Ween invited QOTSA on a tour in 1999 and one of the Ween brothers appears on Songs for the Deaf. To learn more about Ween, go to www.ween.com. 5. Merchandise and Trading 5.1 T-Shirts/Posters/Stickers/etc. The best place to find QOTSA t-shirts is at their gigs. Outside of that, the best place is ebay. Occasionally, someone will find an online store selling a shirt or two, but that's rare. Keep your eye on the official QOTSA message board for those stores. Posters will occasionally pop up online for sale and you can take them from the walls at shows, but the best place to find them is, again, ebay. Stickers, keychains, and other things like that are available at shows, as well as on ebay. As with the other items, someone will occasionally find them in an online store. Qotsa.com's store has a few shirts and assorted items as well. 5.2 Bootlegs A bootleg is a live audio or video recording of a show. It can be done professionally (it's usually broadcast on tv or radio if this happens), but most shows are taped by fans. Shows taped by fans are divided into two categories: soundboard and audience. A soundboard-sourced show happens when the taper plugs his machine into the soundboard and basically records the mix. These recordings almost always turn out perfectly. Audience recordings happen when a taper takes his rig (ie, taping machine, usually a mini disc or portable DAT, and microphones) into a show and stands there with his mics pointed at the stage and the taping machine running. The quality of these recordings depends on what kind of mics the taper is using, where he is in the venue, how loud the people around him are, where he mounts the mics, what kind of machine he's using, and some other factors. Audience recordings range from great to horrible. The taper takes his tape home and then contacts other people if he wants to trade. Thus a bootleg is born. For more about taping, go to section 5.2b. Getting a bootleg. If you want the real thing, the only place to get them is through someone who has the show and who'll copy it for you. If you're not bothered by mp3s, live shows will show up on file sharing services, such as Audiogalaxy and Morpheus, FTPs (when they're around), and on people's sites. For info on how to get bootlegs, go to Pzane's Trading FAQ at http://www.spfc.org/tradingfaq.txt. 5.2a Trading There are a number of live QOTSA shows out there. The band frowns very deeply on selling live shows, so trading is the best way to get a live QOTSA collection started. The best place to learn about trading is here: http://www.spfc.org/tradingfaq.txt. This FAQ will let you know everything you need to know to get started as a trader. 5.2b Taping First off, QOTSA DOES allow taping, provided that the shows you tape are NOT SOLD. Now that you know that, here's what you need to do if you want to start taping. The first thing you need to do is buy a recording device and mics for audio taping, or a video camera for video taping. The two most popular recording devices are mini discs and portable DAT decks. Mini discs run between $100 and $400 right now. A portable DAT deck will cost at least $600. Mics vary in price from very cheap ($100 or so) to very expensive (thousands of dollars). Among serious tapers, DAT decks are preferred to mini discs because they provide a little more quality and because you can put more on one DAT tape than you can on one mini disc (this is VERY important, since you're most likely to get caught taping a show when you switch your tape/disc). However, if you're a first-time taper, you're not terribly concerned with having a bit more quality, and you don't have $700 to spend on a DAT deck, get a mini disc. The issue of mics is complicated enough that it won't be explained here. Visit http://www.harmony-central.com/Other/mic-faq.txt for more info on mics. Now that you have the equipment, you need to know how to go about taping the show. QOTSA supports bootlegging (ie, live recording), but the venues they play usually don't. This brings up the issue of stealth recording. For tips on stealth recording, go to section 6.7 of the SPFC's FAQ at www.spfc.org/band/faq.html. One technique that is not mentioned on that page is this (addendum to Option B under "Where Do I Put the Mics?"): the site suggests that you clip the mics on the outside of a baseball cap. You're likely to get caught if you do this, so an alternative to it is to make the first two holes in your cap wider and tape the mics inside the cap, just under the holes. The mics will not be visible if you do this and having them that high on your body ensures a better recording. The only issue here is what to do with the mic wires, as they will run down the back of your cap. Try running them under your shirt and bringing a t-shirt to drape over your neck to hide the wires (unless your hair is long enough to conceal them). You're not very likely to get caught using this method. For more info on all things mini disc, go to www.minidisc.org. For more info DAT decks and recording, go to http://www.solorb.com/dat-heads/FAQ. For more info on buying and recording with mics, go to http://www.harmony-central.com/Other/mic-faq.txt. note: video taping is not covered here; if you're a video taper and you'd like to contribute your knowledge and experience, please send an email. 6.
